Paris trip in May 2001
Friday, May 25th
Our last day of sight-seeing. We really felt we were on museum and church overload, so we took a break and went to the Roland Garros.
Its more commonly known as Rolling Gardens...where the French Open is played. After all the paintings, sculptures, statues, arches, gables, and flying
buttresses...watching a few tennis matches was very refreshing! The French Open had not yet begun but there were many qualifying matches going on
all day long. Once again, Mark navigated us through the Metro stops and ins and outs and we arrived about lunch time. We bought our tickets and had
a quick lunch sandwich and coca-cola-light.
The first tennis match we saw was with Pless. He
is from Denmark and ended up winning his match
and finally went on to the French Open. After we
returned home, we followed his progress and he
advanced quite well until he had an injury and
had to withdraw from the match.
Then we got to see them sweep the courts.
We also watched Bes while we were
there. She was from Spain and she
also won the match against her Greek
opponent. She finally got beat in one
of the early French Open matches
after we had returned to Portland.
Both of the matches were excellent. The sun was warm, there was NO
breeze. It was the ultimate icing on all the cake we had been having so far.
We found our way home on the Metro and walked the last few blocks to our hotel. On the way there, we came across 5 kids doing break-dancing and
listening to rap music. Someone had hired them for some type of commercial as they were doing certain dance steps over and over and were being filmed
right on the sidewalk by the Seine. They had collected a great crowd of people so we stopped and took several of our own shots. It was great fun watching
them perform.
